Frostbite and Hypothermia

The polar vortex is causing bitter cold weather conditions which can lead to frostbites and hypothermia.

Frostbite is a condition which initially causes tingling of the face or the extremity. This can lead to numbness, pale or reddened skin and also pain of the affected area. In severe cases frostbite can cause gangrene which can require an amputation of the fingers or toes.

Hypothermia
is a related condition in which cold weather causes core body temperature to be lowered to dangerous levels. Hypothermia can cause brain function to decrease which can lead to confusion, slurred speech and drowsiness. Severe hypothermia causes slowing of the heart rate, metabolism and can cause death.

Safeguards to take to prevent hypothermia and frostbite

Dress warmly in layers.

Protect extremities with winter boots, gloves or mittens.

Protect you head with hat. Up 30% of heat can be lost from head.

Limit your outdoor activities and take frequent breaks indoor in warmer temperature.

Stay hydrated.

Get out of wet clothing or shoes as soon as possible.
