Food Safety during an Emergency

Keep an appliance thermometer in the Freezer and Refrigerator.
Make sure that freezer is below 0 F and refrigerator is below 40 F.
During a power outage food will stay safe for only 4 hours in a refrigerator and up to 24 hours in a half full freezer or 48 hours in a full freezer if it is not opened.
Do not taste the food to determine its safety.
You should discard perishable foods from the refrigerator such as meats, poultry, fish, milk, soft cheese and eggs after four hours of power outage. Freezer items are safe if they have ice crystals before the power come back. Please note that freezer items will re-freeze once power comes on and may not be safe.
When in doubt, do not consume the food.
