Migraine Headache

Migraine is a throbbing or pulsating pain on one side of the head with associated symptoms such as nausea or intolerance to light or sound. Migraine headache can last for a few hours to a few days.

Some patients also get an aura such as flash of light, blind spots and tingling sensation to the arm or leg which can occur preceding or during a migraine. An aura usually lasts for less than one hour.

Migraine headache has a genetic component and about two thirds of patients have family history of migraines.  It is also about three times more common in women as compared to men. About 15% of population has migraine headaches.

Treatment of the migraine headache involves lifestyle changes and medications. Patients with headache often have to limit their normal activities and prefer resting in a dark quiet room.

Triggers of Migraines:

  • Emotional Stress
  • Sensitivity to certain preservatives and chemicals in foods (example: MSG).
  • Missing meals
  • Caffeine: Excessive caffeine or withdrawal from caffeine.
  • Alcohol
  • Excessive fatigue
  • Lack of sleep
  • Menstrual period
  • Loud noise, bright light, perfumes

Not all headaches are migraine related.  If you experience a worse headache of your life or if the headache is associated with mental status changes, you should go the emergency room.

Patients with an acute migraine headache which is not improving can be treated in an urgent care.
