What to do with Heat Advisory?

A Heat Advisory is issued by the National Weather Service of the United States within 12 hours of the heat index reaching one of two criteria levels. A warning will be issued if there is a heat index of at least 105°F but less than 115°F for less than 3 hours per day or if nighttime low temperatures are above 80°F for 2 consecutive days. High values of the heat index are caused by high temperatures and high humidity and can pose a threat to human life through conditions such as heat stroke.
To cope with the heat, the residents are encouraged to:

  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Drink 6-8 glasses of water. Electrolyte drinks are OK.
  • Soda with excess sugar and caffeine is harmful and cause dehydration.
  • Alcohol is harmful
  • Stay in air-conditioned rooms as much as possible.
  • Stay out of the sun.
  • Check on neighbors and relatives.
  • Reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or late evening.
  • Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
  • During outdoor work, take frequent rest breaks in air conditioning or under shade.

Heat illnesses are easily preventable by taking precautions in hot weather.
Children, elderly, and obese people have a higher risk of developing heat illness. People taking certain medications or drinking alcohol also have a higher risk. Patients with health problems such as diabetes or heart disease are at higher risk. However, even a top athlete in superb condition can succumb to heat illness if he or she ignores the warning signs.

If the problem isn't addressed, heat cramps (caused by loss of salt from heavy sweating) can lead to heat exhaustion (caused by dehydration), which can progress to heatstroke. Heatstroke, the most serious of the three, can cause shock, brain damage, organ failure, and even death.
